Steve Magowan joined Steiker, Fischer, Edwards & Greenapple, P.C. and SES Advisors, Inc. and as a Shareholder in 2007. His practice focuses on counseling privately held companies on employee ownership, general business matters, ownership transition and complex estate planning for business owners. He has particular expertise in the field of employee ownership and its relationship to estate planning, and serves as an advisor to companies in the establishment and maintenance of Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOPs) as well as worker-owned cooperatives.

 


Prior to joining SFE&G, Steve was a partner with Gravel & Shea in Burlington, VT. He is a member of the Chittenden County, Vermont (former Vice-Chair, Probate & Trust Law Section) and New York Bar Associations, as well as the American Bar Association where he sits on the Estate Planning and Administration for Business Owners Committee. He has published numerous articles on tax planning issues for privately held companies and individuals. He is the author of "Governing the ESOP Company: Fiduciary Issues and Practical Solutions for Boards of Directors in ESOP Companies," published by the National Center for Employee Ownership in The ESOP Company Board Handbook, and of BNA Tax Management Portfolio #804, Probate and Estate Administration.

 

Steve is active in The ESOP Association and is a Vice President of its New England chapter. Steve helped to found the Vermont Employee Ownership Center in 2001 and is a member of its Board of Directors. He has lectured at each VEOC annual conference and at numerous other conferences about employee ownership and ESOPs, including conferences sponsored by The ESOP Association, NCEO, the Vermont Bar Association, the Million Dollar Roundtable and the Harris J. Plaisted Annual Conference.

 

Steve received his law degree from Washington University in Saint Louis, MO, where he was Executive Notes and Comments Editor for the Washington University Law Quarterly and a member of the Order of the Coif. He received his Bachelor of Arts with highest honors from Ohio University. Steve is the Treasurer of the Board of Commissioners of the Chittenden County Transportation Authority.
